Under Akbar, numerous local rulers and eminent personalities held important positions in the Mughal Empire. Like other places within the state, Bikaner too was taken over by the Marathas after the Mughals lost power. The British assimilated the area into their own empire in 1818, and held on to it till losing all of India in 1947.
• Attractions: Laxmi Niwas Palace, Junagarh Fort, Ganga Singh Museum Karni Mata Temple and Lalgarh Palace are some places of interest here.
• Climate: Bikaner has a typical desert climate, making the weather extremely hot. Summer days experience scorching heat, whereas at night, the temperature drops sufficiently. Winters are cool and pleasant with mean highs of 25 degree Celsius, and average lows of 15 degrees.
• Accessibility: Bikaner is accessible via trains from a number of Indian cities like Kanpur, Agra, Delhi, Mumbai, Thiruvananthapuram and Kolkata.
