Initially Chinthaka was involved in the corporate world and later the travel business. He became a hot-air balloon pilot at age 33. He trained in the USA and received his commercial Balloon Pilot's License after which he got an instructor's rating in Hot Air Ballooning. Chinthaka was the first pilot who had a FAA certification for commercial ballooning, in the South Asia region. He is also a qualified ballooning instructor, and is currently Honorary Secretary of the Sri Lanka Association for Ballooning and Airships. Chinthaka was the first Pilot to fly the skies of Kurdistan - Iraq as chief pilot for the only balloon company in the country. Chinthaka was also the first balloon pilot to be certified by the Iraqi CAA. He has flown several other countries including Sri Lanka, USA. Currently he is flying in Canada..

I was given the opportunity to train and obtain a balloon pilot's license from the USA. I am working very closely with the Civil Aviation Authority of Sri Lanka to formulate a curriculum and syllabus to train pilots locally. I am also working with the Ministry of Defence and the CAASL to find new locations in Sri Lanka to fly. Ballooning has become a passion for me. It's a feeling like no other... .
