Gayatri's passion for scuba diving has taken her from Goa to the Andaman Islands, via Thailand and Malaysia. After completing her dive-master course in Malaysia in 2004 and working on Tioman Island as a Dive Master for a year, she joined the (then) newly-launched Barefoot Scuba at Havelock, Andaman Islands, in 2005, as one of its first employees. In 2008, she qualified as a PADI Dive Instructor, completing her course in Phuket, Thailand (becoming only the second Indian woman to achieve PADI dive-instructor status at the time), and returned the next year to work as a Dive Instructor at Barefoot Scuba. Gayatri is currently on a sabbatical from active diving instruction .

I got my first taste of diving in the Lakshadweep Islands, back in 2001-02. After that experience, I made up my mind that scuba diving is what I want to do for a living! I did my open-water diving certification in Goa, and qualified to be a PADI Dive Master in Malaysia, where I worked as a dive master for a year. I did my PADI instructor course from Thailand in 2008. Wherever I've gone diving, I've thoroughly enjoyed the experience. But it depends on what you, the diver, are looking for. Some people dive to see the big stuff; they like shipwrecks, sharks and large pelagic creatures. I prefer the tiny stuff, like pygmy seahorses and nudibranchs! In India, I've had fun diving at Nethrani, off Mangalore, and in Lakshadweep, Goa and the Andaman Islands. In Southeast Asia, Thailand, Malaysia and Indonesia offer great diving experiences. In fact, I would say Indonesia is my favourite diving spot, primarily due to the amazing variety of marine life in its waters. Among my best experiences was a Liveaboard trip to Komodo and Flores - islands in the Indonesian archipelago - and diving in Sipadan (Malaysia), while staying on an abandoned oil rig in Indonesia
