The charming if now tumbledown (and often polluted) hill town of Darjeeling is an important tea-cultivating centre. More obviously, it is a welcome retreat from the clammy heat of the plains.

There are tigers here but this World Heritage Site (1985) is famous for its one-horned rhinos, among Mother Nature’s most awe-inspiring creations. The official rhino count here is around 2000
