Take a short weekend trek to Bijli Mahadev Temple, which people after one visit call “Electric Mahadev” because the experience is truly electrifying! The legendary temple is located on top of Mathan Hills in Kullu Valley. Kullu valley is also known as “Valley of Gods”, and it is in the lap of majestic Himalayas with breathtaking landscapes, distinct rich culture and heritage. The valley is surrounded by Pir Panjal Range on one side and Parvati Range on the other. Bijli Mahadev is one of the sacred temples in Himachal Pradesh, and at 8000 feet it towers over the town. It has got its name after a supernatural phenomenon that occurs every now and then. The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva, and it is said that the statue in the temple is occasionally struck by lightning and it shatters into pieces. The priest then uses butter as an adhesive to put the statue together. Sounds thrilling enough to make one want to trek all the way up just to see this phenomenon!

The temple is finely made with stone and wood, a typical hill architecture with sloping roof made of wooden planks. The tranquility of the place will surely lure you when you explore the temple’s heritage, especially the carving on wood and vibrant paintings on the temple doors. The trek starts from Jana village passing the ancient village of Naggar - once the capital of the Kullu Kingdom. Climb the stairs which cross verdant forests, paddy fields and terraced orchards of apples, pears and pomegranate, and a small Himalayan Village called Jana. Enjoy the spellbinding panoramic views from the temple overlooking the Parvati and Kullu Valley. After reaching the top, the view is so alluring that your fatigue of climbing there will vanish!
