Kalawantin Trek in Panvel, Maharashtra is a unique night trek that provides you the perfect break from the hustle and bustle of the big city. Kalavantin Durg stands tall in the Western Ghats, at an elevation of around 2,330 feet. Located between Matheran and Panvel, the fort is believed to have been a watch tower in the past. Before your night trek to Kalavantin Durg, start with the briefing and introductions at Panvel Station and proceed towards the base village (Thakurwadi) by public transport. The real trek begins a little after midnight, when you head to Prabalmachi. Hidden in the hills, this quaint little village is the mid-point of your trek. Prabalmachi offers breathtaking views of the outskirts of Panvel and is also the place where trekkers can relax, freshen up, and have a meal. This is also a great spot to look for fireflies and to listen to the sounds of the night. If you want a clearer picture of the village along with its farms and forests, you’ll get to see it the next morning on your way back.
After a hearty breakfast while witnessing a stunning sunrise, proceed towards the pinnacle. Once you’re at the top, you get a panoramic, picturesque view of the entire valley. From here, you can also see other forts like Peb, Chanderi, Karnala, Matheran, and Ershai. Though there are steps carved out, you have to be slow and careful while making that climb as there is no railing or protection on one side. The slippery, narrow steps make the downward trek quite challenging. After exploring the peak and taking in its beauty, start your descent, stopping once more at Prabalmachi and the base village, before heading to the station to catch your train back home.
This night trek is a unique experience, even for seasoned trekkers. During this trek, you get to witness a gorgeous sunrise, have a locally-prepared lunch, make friends with like-minded people, and go back with memories to cherish for a lifetime.
