The Shira Route lies in the western slopes of Kilimanjaro. This is the path less travelled. It’s a remote and rarely visited trail. You will have an amazing experience exploring this route that offers the best view possible.This route to Kilimanjaro gives you a generous amount of acclimatization time, giving you the best possible chance of reaching the summit at Uhuru Peak. The best way to train for Kilimanjaro is to strap a pack on your back and go hiking as much as possible. By doing so, your feet and joints will become accustomed to the constant walking you will face on the trek. Also be sure to hit the gym!

Itinerary:

 

Day 01: Arusha - Londorossi - Shira 1 (5-6 hours, 11483 feet)

You will be picked up from your hotel in Arusha at 7 AM and taken to the Londorossi gate for registration. After a short drive on a steep track through farmland and plantation, start climbing through shrub forest to reach the rim of the Shira Plateau. You will love the view of the surrounding plains as you climb up. Have your dinner and overnight stay at the camp.

 

Day 02: Shira 1 - Shira 2 (4 hours, 12598 feet)

After having your breakfast, start your trek to moorland and volcanic rock formations of the plateau. You will reach Shira peak Cathedral by afternoon. You will be amused by the eerie feeling in the afternoon as the mist spreads. Admire the view of Mount Meru from your camp. Have your dinner and overnight stay at Shira 2 camp.

 

Day 03: Shira Camp - Barranco Camp (5-6 hours, 15091 feet)
After breakfast start your trekking to Barranco Camps. Look for different species of birds while trekking. As you climb up, the landscape changes from forest to desert. The red moraine fields of Lava Tower cannot be missed. Descend to Barranco camp and take rest for the day. Have your dinner and overnight stay at the camp.

 

Day 4: Barranco camp to Karanga valley (4 hours, 13779 feet)

After breakfast, get ready to climb the volcanic rock barrier “the Great Barranco”. Admire the stunning views of the valley as you get closer to it. Reach Karanga valley and have your dinner. Overnight stay at the camp.

 

Day 05: Karanga Valley to Barafu camp (5 hours, 15091 feet)

Take a 5 hour walk through the beautiful trail walk in the foothills of mount Kilimanjaro to reach the Barafu camp. Reach the camp by evening and freshen up. Have your dinner at night and overnight stay at the camp.

 

Day 06: Barafu to Uhuru Peak (8-10 hours, 19340 feet)

You will be woken up at 1 AM to start your trek. Have your snacks with hot tea and then start climbing the magnificent Uhuru Peak. Take your time to digest the fact that you have climbed the peak. Be proud and may be do a victory dance!  Then descend to Barafu camp for breakfast and then proceed to Mweka camp through lowland grasses and scrub.

 

Day 07: Mweka camp to Mweka gate- Arusha

After breakfast walk through the beautiful lush green forest and reach the Mweka camps, where your trekking ends. Take a ride from there to reach back to Arusha.

Best Time to go: Although Kilimanjaro can be climbed throuhout the year, the ideal months are from September to May. June, July and August tend to get really cold. January, February and September are considered to be the best months for this trek.


HOW TO REACH?
Nearest airport is Kilimanjaro International Airport or Dar es Salam airport. From Kilimanjaro Airport, Arusha is 46 KM away by road, from where the trek starts. If you are coming from Dar es Salam, you have to take another internal flight to Arusha. 
 

NOTE:
1. For travelling to Tanzania, yellow fever vaccination is a MUST. Visa needs to be taken in India itself
2. Cost considered at 1 USD = INR 68
