The venture takes you to some of the most incredible and awe-inspiring attractions of Ladakh. Begin the experience straight after arrival in the region by seeing some wonderful monuments of Leh. Built during the reign of King Sengge Namgyal, Leh Palace was once home to the royal family of Ladakh. Apart from this, visit the mesmerising Shanti Stupa, a white-domed building in the lap of nature, and the local market of Leh to buy the peculiar handicrafts produced here.
A visit to Thiksey Monastery and Stok Palace is also offered on the venture. Amazing collections of Buddhist artefacts that include statues, thangkas, seals and coins can be seen and admired at these locations. Also known as Ldumra, Nubra Valley will be your destination on the third day of the tour. Passing through Khardung La, one of the highest motorable roads in the world, appreciate the beauty of the Indus River and the snow-capped peaks of the Zanskar Range.
Ride on the backs of Bactrian camels in and around Hunder village. At a drive of about 15 km from here is a town, called Diskit. In February, sacred mask dances, part of the festival of Dosmoche, are organised at Diskit gompa. Shey and Stok palaces are also on the list of attractions that you visit on the excursion.
Itinerary:
Day 01: Arrival in Leh | Local Sightseeing
On arrival at Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport, transfer to the hotel and check-in. Acclimatise during the day and in the evening, visit some popular attractions in the city. The excursion will first take you to Leh Palace – an architectural masterpiece. The 17th century establishment was once residence to the royal family of Ladakh.
Built with an intention to honour 2500 years of Buddhism, Shanti Stupa is the next sightseeing stop. It sits majestically on a hilltop in Changspa, and it was inaugurated by the 14th Dalai Lama himself. The last place to be explored in the evening is the local market of Leh. This trip has been organised so that you can admire the local handicrafts and do some souvenir shopping. After sightseeing and shopping, return to the hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 02: Sightseeing in and around Leh
After a leisurely breakfast leave towards the popular Shey Palace. Built in the year 1655 during the reign of King Deldan Namgyal, the palace has an over 10-metre tall statue of Lord Buddha. After paying respect to the deity, leave for Thiksey Monastery. About 16 km from the city of Leh, the gompa has a vast collection of articles of Buddhist art including thangkas, statues, and wall paintings, along with numerous stupas.
The next stop on the trip is the 14th century Stok Palace – founded by Lama Lhawang. See 108 volumes of the teachings of Lord Buddha, kept in the library of the establishment. A new temple, constructed inside the complex and dedicated to Avalokitesvara, is another major attraction for visitors. There is also a museum here that has a fine collection of regional artworks, coins and seals.
Revitalise the mind and soul at the peaceful and scenic Sindhu Ghat. Hemis Monastery is the next stop, where a sacred mask dance is organised during the 5th month of the Tibetan Calendar. When done with sightseeing, return to the hotel for an overnight stay.
Day 03: Leh to Nubra Valley via Khardung La
Post breakfast, leave for Nubra Valley, via Khardung La. The latter landform is one of the highest motorable roads in the world, and it gives awe-inspiring views of the Zanskar and Saser Mountains. After lunch, take an adventurous ride on the backs of Bactrian camels through sand dunes between the village of Hunder and the town of Diskit. Later travel to your lodging in Nubra Valley to rest at night.
Day 04: Nubra Valley to Leh via Khardung La
After breakfast, take a trip to Diskit Monastery – a popular tourist attraction. The gompa, which is also the biggest one in the region, gives a great view of the landform. Feel the same excitement, and experience the same amazing views as during the previous morning, while passing through Khardung La on your way back to Leh. On reaching the city, enjoy an overnight stay at the hotel.
Day 05: Departure from Leh
In the morning, transfer to Kushok Bakula Rinpoche Airport, and continue your onward journey.
