Most associate winters with extreme cold, fog and the loss of will to head out and enjoy themselves. Even many of those, who go trekking, consider it a summer sport. If you are an avid hiker and are willing to try the activity in winters, then head to Himachal Pradesh. There are loads of exotic treks in Himachal Pradesh; one of those, the centrepiece of this package, begins from Manali. The excursion commences from Rumsu base camp, and after resting and having breakfast, you will go on an acclimatisation walk to Naggar, which is famed for its 15th-century castle.

For the Manali Winter trek the next morning, you will be provided with comfortable gumboots to protect you from the cold and make it easier to walk on the snow. The hike will lead you to Sterling, a lush forest near the hill station. You may get to see animals here that come down from higher elevations in the winter season. After you return to the camp, you will have an opportunity to have fun with snow and chat around a bonfire. This is not all though because to make your experience of snow trek in Manali better, we will take you on a sightseeing tour of Manali, where you can also shop at Mall Road.

Itinerary:

Day 01: Arrival in Rumsu | Trek to Naggar
After pick-up from Patlikuhal, embark on a Jeep ride to the base camp in Rumsu. After freshening up, savour breakfast and then complete the snow trek in Manali registration process. Later, rest for some time and then have a hearty lunch. Follow it up with a short hike to the town of Naggar; it will allow you to become comfortable at walking on snow and also help you acclimatise.

There are numerous attractions here; the most famous being Naggar Castle. Dating back to 1460, this wood and stone castle is now a heritage hotel. Another popular site in the town is Gauri Shankar Temple, built in the honour of Lord Shiva. This brick shrine has detailed carvings on its walls. The three-tier pagoda-style Sundari Temple, situated amidst lush cedar trees, is another good place to visit. For the appreciators of paintings, Roerich Art Gallery is an ideal place.

After walking through the town, return to Rumsu base camp for an overnight stay.

Day 02: Trek to Sterling
Before you commence the Manali winter trek, you will be given gumboots as per your feet size. Then, start walking towards the forest of Sterling, which has lush vegetation in the form of pines, chestnuts, oaks and deodars. If you are lucky, you may get the sight of regional animals; in winter animals that live higher up descend to lower elevations, so keep your cameras ready.

After completing the hike, counted among the exotic treks in Himachal Pradesh, return to the base camp for tea and snacks. You can have fun with snow by making snow fairies, snowmen or snowballs. Later, sit around a bonfire to warm yourselves up and relish dinner before retiring for the night.

Day 03: Sightseeing in Manali | Departure
Relish breakfast amidst snow, and then board a Jeep to travel to Manali. Once in this famous hill station and popular holiday destination, visit Hadimba Devi Temple. Surrounded by tall deodar trees, the shrine is renowned for the intricate carvings on its wooden structure. It is one of the few temples in the country that are dedicated to a demon.

On the sightseeing tour, you will also visit Vashisht Temple in the eponymous village. Showcasing the traditional architecture of the hills, the shrine, dedicated to Lord Hanuman, is claimed to be 4000 years old.
