The high snow-clad Dhauladhar ranges of the Himalayas form a magnificent backdrop to the hill resort of Dharamsala. Dharamsala, is the principal township of Kangra district, and has been home to the Tibetan leader, His Holiness the Dalai Lama, since 1959. The town with its dense pine/ deodar forests, numerous streams and nearby snowline is a beautiful place. It is full of life and yet the tranquility of Buddhist culture prevails.  Lower Dharamsala (1380m) is a busy commercial centre while upper Dharamsala (1830m) with the suburbs of Mcleodganj and Forsytheganj, retains a British flavour and colonial lifestyle. There is a large Tibetan Community here who has made it their home.Shepherds, “Gadis”, who migrate each spring with their flock from the foothills of the Kangra valley to the rich grazing areas of Lahaul and Himachal Pradesh, inhabit the Dhauladhar region.
